A Romantic walk in Paris
Depart from Place des Abbesses, on the butte Montmartre to discover Paris in a day. This is an ideal spot for a very Parisian breakfast before heading to the Sacré-Coeur Basilica to admire the view.
At your own pace, then walk down the rue des Martyrs enjoying its pretty shops, until you reach Saint-Georges district where you must visit the Musée de la Vie Romantique (the Museum of Romantic Life)… of course!
Then take the metro or bus to the Jardin du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Garden) and declare your undying love under the foliage of the trees that border the splendid Medicis Fountain.
Next, visit the Marais district, one of the city’s oldest. Discover its hôtels particuliers, the Picasso museum, designer boutiques, secret spots, such as the Carreau du Temple, and the tranquil Place des Vosges.
The Palais Royal and its gardens
The Palais Royal and its gardens were created by Cardinal Richelieu in 1633. It is just a short walk from the Louvre, and royal families lived there before the Palace of Versailles was built. The prestigious and peaceful palace gardens are surrounded by superb futuristic architecture with contemporary sculptures by Buren and Bury. The ‘Colonnes de Buren’ were designed by artist Daniel Duren and are situated in the courtyard, near the garden and Ministry of Culture. The 260 black and white striped octagonal columns are definitely worth a visit and are one of the symbols of Paris.
The history of Paris
Here’s a way to travel back in time through the streets of Paris, all in the space of one day. Begin your journey in Roman times by visiting the Arènes de Lutèce. Weather permitting, don’t hesitate to move on to the Middle Ages by exploring the Musée de Cluny, and walk along the rue Mouffetard, the rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève and the rue des Ecoles in front of the Sorbonne, Europe’s oldest university.
Have lunch in the Latin Quarter and then cross the river to the Sainte-Chapelle, a splendid example of Gothic architecture. When you pass the tip of the Ile de la Cité and the embankments, you’ll come to the Louvre, former residence of the kings of France. Admire its perfectly balanced architecture which will take you into the Classical period. Close by, the avenue de l’Opéra offers a typical Haussmann open perspective.
From there, take the Météor metro line (14), and you will find yourself in the new district around the Bibliothèque de France in a flash. Here you will witness the audacity, immensity and elegance of the heart of contemporary Paris, and you can dine by the Seine River not far below.
And don’t forget … the Champs Elysées, the Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre Museum.
